On 21 November 2023, practitioners and colleagues gathered at Emmerson Chambers for an ethics hypothetical, “A hellish day in Court”. Central to the scenario was the provenance of an ‘artwork’ - was the ‘Banksy’ real or AI generated?

The players ‘coincidentally’ had the same names as characters from the long-running soap opera, Days of our Lives. The niche group of Days’ fans among those assembled revealed themselves when the cast was introduced. The ethical challenges faced by the cast became ever more extreme as the hour progressed.

Kudos to Tom Cordiner KC who came fully in character as 'Steve “Patch” Johnson', and to Tim Burn-Francis who ad-libbed three former wives to help overcome some of the ethical challenges of his character, ‘John Black'. Melissa Marcus was a tremendous ‘Dr Marlena Evans KC’ (who wrote the book on defamation) and Lucy Davis brought gravitas to the occasion as 'Kayla Brady KC'. The Emmerson Chambers cast was rounded out by “very successful law firm partners” Amy Surkis (‘Hope Brady’) and Peter Wallis KC (‘Bo Brady’). Natalie Hickey acted as moderator. Stephen Rebikoff imparted valuable legal principles to those gathered.

Thanks to everyone who came along and helped us celebrate 2023. We appreciate your support very much.
