On 4 November 2022, the barristers of Emmerson Chambers were delighted to hold a launch event two years in the making.
David Shavin KC opened the formalities, welcoming guests to the first ever intellectual property chambers in Melbourne.
We were delighted and honoured for our first alumni, Justice Rofe, appointed to the Federal Court of Australia on 12 July 2021, to launch the floor with a warm and welcoming speech describing the origins of the idea and the legacy of Dr John McLaren Emmerson QC (1938-2014), who has inspired so many of us.
A portrait of Dr Emmerson has been commissioned for the floor. Stephen Rebikoff described the background to the commission and what was involved to bring to life the characteristics of Dr Emmerson. He thanked the artist, Ingrid Braun, who multi-tasks in being both an accomplished artist and a member of the Victorian Bar.
Natalie Hickey concluded the formalities by introducing ’the band’ which had just concluded a frenetic practice session in between court commitments. Some members of our floor are ‘musos from way back’: Ed Heerey KC, Peter Wallis KC, Justin Wheelahan and Andrew McRobert. Joined by friends on various instruments, it was a fantastic way to kick off our chambers' launch. The music, dancing and very late night (for some) created plenty of enduring memories.
Thanks to everyone who attended and who helped create such a wonderful occasion.
